Gail Harvey – Artists Statement

My paintings are partly about landscape. They are in some ways closer to touch. When I’m looking at the land or sea in my mind I’m physically moving across it, feeling its space, rhythms and textures I watch the ravens glide in pairs like figure skaters, slipping through space, interacting with each other and the wind. It’s very joyful. Painting is like this, a flow, a broken rhythm; movement describing energy and space.

We’re very lucky here in Shetland. We can look at a starry night sky and really feel its timelessness. It makes a link through time and I often think of the cave painters looking up and having similar thoughts about the night sky.

People will always paint, it seems such a natural thing to do.
